23 November 2006

Prize winners

Dozens of students and former students will gather at the University of Abertay Dundee this evening (Thursday 23 November) for the annual Prizegiving Ceremony, held on the eve of the November Graduation Ceremony.

Accompanied by friends and families, the prizewinners will be welcomed by Professor Bernard King CBE, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Abertay University. They will then receive their awards from Professor Mike Swanston, Vice-Principal (Academic Development).

A total of 77 students are receiving 86 prizes covering the full range of disciplines taught at the University. There are two new prizes this year.

The Hannah Maclure Prize, donated by Myra Faulkner, is being awarded to a first year student in each of the four Schools achieving a high level of performance in a mathematical component of their programme. The second new prize - the Oxford University Press Prize - is awarded to the student with the best grade point average in year 1, and to those students in year 2 and 3 with the best improved grade point average.

The other awards are supported by individuals, local and national organisations and the University of Abertay Dundee itself, and include prizes established in memory of former students and prominent local people.

Professor King said: “Prizegiving is an important event in the University’s calendar because it especially honours those who have performed exceptionally well in their studies. On behalf of the University, I warmly congratulate all this evening’s prize-winners.

“The ceremony also recognises the relationship the University has with the world of business and industry.

“Many of our prizes and awards are donated by companies and organisations with which the University enjoys links through consultancy work or through other collaborative ventures.

“We value greatly such partnerships, from local employers to national and international businesses and also with professional organisations, very highly indeed, and I thank most warmly each of the donors for their support in this way of the University, its purpose, its courses, and especially its students.”
